If you don't have anywhere to grow local native plants, or if you'd like to lend the environment a helping hand, National Tree Day is just around the corner, next weekend 28-29 July. There are opportunities across the Illawarra region, with planting events being organised in the Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama local government areas. Come out and give a helping hand to the next generation of habitat, get fit, and meet like-minded people - plus there's usually snacks or even a BBQ!
In Wollongong, Council has organised planting events in three natural areas on Sunday 28 July:
- Cawley Park, Russell Vale, 10:00 to 11:00 – Cawley Park National Tree Day Site Details
- Byarong Creek, Figtree, 9:00 to 10:30 – Byarong Creek National Tree Day Site Details
- Lake Illawarra, Holborn Park, Berkeley, 9:30 to 10:30 – Holborn Park National Tree Day Site Details
In Shellharbour you have the option of:
- Elizabeth Brownlee Reserve on Digby Close, Albion Park, 10am-1pm on Saturday 27 July, working with Tullimbah Landcare - Elizabeth Brownlee Reserve National Tree Day Site Details
- North Shellharbour Beach 10am-1pm, with Shellharbour City Council on Sunday 28 July - North Shellharbour Beach National Tree Day Site Details
And in Kiama, as well as many Schools Tree Day events and plantings on private property, there's a Landcare Illawarra event organised by Werri Beach Dunecare the following weekend, on Saturday 3 August, with a mix of planting and weeding.

Come on out and be part of the fun. Most events are suitable for all ages, but please check for accessibility restrictions and make sure you wear suitable clothing (long sleeves, covered shoes and a hat).
